Bay Magic
Hervey Bay is a laid-back community, located on the shores of pristine calm waters and renowned for being the Whale Watch capital of Queensland. A long weekend trip to Hervey Bay, three and a half hours north of Brisbane, will allow you to day-trip over to Heritage Listed Fraser Island; jetski in the Straits; fish from one of the numerous beautiful jetties; or delight in morning tea at Arkarra Lagoons.
Water Park
The kids will love the Pialba Water Park during the Summer months, while the adults can relax with a coffee and brunch as they supervise. Hervey Bay beach stretches 12 kilometres along the foreshore, with great bike tracks or walking path, plenty of eateries, parks and picnic tables. From Point Vernon to Urangan, there is sure to be a lovely area to explore or swim at with your family. Local shopping complexes; all amenities; beachside caravan parks; and locally owned Tourist Parks – you will find a perfect place to set up, ready for your adventures in ‘The Bay’.
Whale Watching
There are numerous whale watching vessels operating during whale season, or dusk cruises and fishing charters available at all times of the year. The Hervey Bay Dive Centre will cater to nature and wildlife cruises or sailing and water tours. Don’t forget to book your day tour to Fraser Island or K’Gari (aboriginal word for ‘paradise’) as it is becoming commonly known.
Historic Maryborough
Located half an hour away from Hervey Bay, charming Maryborough on the banks of the Mary River, is in a world of its own! Locals call it ‘The Burra’, with Market Day held each Thursday downtown (tip: weather permitting). Maryborough was first settled as a wool port by the Europeans in 1847, and is one of Queensland’s oldest cities. Maryborough boasts fine examples of Queenslander-style homes and heritage-listed buildings such as the Courthouse and Customs House, both located in Wharf Street. Take your time to explore the region, including Maryborough and the outskirts.
Fraser Island
Previously, you will have read about Fraser Island and her beautiful beaches, creeks, sand driving, perched lakes and rainforests. A weekend adventure to Hervey Bay is not going to be enough time to explore all the region has to offer, and personally we think the months between September and May are just perfect to enjoy all the swimming and water activities The Bay has on offer. Check out the villages of Tiaro; Howard; Childers; Toogoom and Burrum Heads for fishing; and Torbanlea for a real country experience. Make some memories and head a few hours north of Brisbane for a quick and eventful get-away!
